Now that school is in full swing, we want to help you mix up your child’s lunch a bit. Let’s add some excitement to those boring, everyday lunches! Most of the time when you ask a child what their favorite part of the school day is, they usually respond with “lunch!” or (better yet) “recess!”. It is so important to properly fuel children during the school day, not only to optimize their performance at school, but to give them a strong foundation to make their own healthy choices. That is why we have created a comprehensive list of items that can be mixed and matched together effortlessly! There are a few essential categories to choose from. Preparing in advance will help you manage lunches more easily and it allows for a stress free school day, for you and your child! Even though it is much simpler to prep ahead of time, it could also depend on how fickle your child is. We recommend sitting down with your child and creating a list of lunch items they may want for the week. When completed, get shopping!

These are some tips on how to prep food effortlessly:
  • Talk with your child so that you can brainstorm a calendar of ideas for the next week or two.
  • Go to Kuhn’s.com to build your grocery list. Order online for pick up or delivery to save some time.
  • Use Airtight, BPA-free microwavable or freezer-safe containers.
  • Cut any vegetables ahead of time and store them individually
  • Batch cook pasta, rice, quinoa, eggs, etc. Batch cooking is essentially used for creating meals based around one ingredient.
  • Buffet Style- prep ingredients ahead and mix and match to create different meals.

Now, we keep mentioning that you need to consult with your child for lunch. Psychologically speaking, kids learn by doing. When you show your child that they can create their own lunch they will be more apt to pick items that are healthier for them. Even the picky eaters! While there is a chance your child might not pick anything good for them right away, they’re being taught a very important concept: Independence. With this independence comes confidence. Overall, your child will learn to appreciate and trust their own choices when guided initially by you.
