Healthy Holiday Recipe Swaps
This pandemic has made us all a little more comfortable with our kitchens. With the holidays just around the corner, we can put those skills to good use!Fall holiday menus usually consist of creamy, buttery foods that can add unwanted calories to our diet. We know what it looks like. You are probably thinking there is no way that a meal, specifically created to look AND taste comforting, is going to be remotely the same with “stand-in” ingredients. Well, we did the research. The substitutes found not only help you stick to your diet, but they don’t overpower the flavor of the meal at all. This means you can still eat the meal completely guilt-free!
There are tons of ways to make your meal stand out and also make it taste great. The following are just a few alternative ways to make your holiday a bit heartier!
- Coconut Milk for Heavy Cream
Pumpkin Stews or Pasta can usually guarantee a creamier texture with this product. By substituting with Coconut Milk, you get half the calories! It will also keep the taste of the soup. - Meringue for Frosting
Make a fat-free “frosting” by throwing two egg whites in with 4 tablespoons of sugar. - Cauliflower Mash for Mashed Potatoes
Cauliflower has been pretty popular lately, especially considering you can use it for a ton of recipes to help keep it a bit healthier without getting rid of the taste. - Greek Yogurt for Sour Cream
If you are looking for an alternative that enhances the protein in your diet while kicking in some more nutritional value, Greek Yogurt is the right one! Casseroles or sauces can easily be more wholesome when you substitute equal amounts. - Sparkling Water for Cocktail Mixers
For the most part, you can guarantee at least 30 grams of sugar or MORE when using a typical mixer. By using sparkling water, you cut that out! If you want to add some sweetness to your drink, mashed fruit makes a great addition. - Dark Chocolate for Milk Chocolate
It is obvious why this is on here, there are several benefits that can really help health-wise. Dark chocolate contains “flavonoids” which are high in antioxidants. These can improve blood circulation as well as heart health. - Vanilla Extract for White Sugar
This substitution not only keeps the sugar count down, but it keeps the dish sweet as well!
These are some easy swap-outs that we recommend, but there are certainly TONS more online. Be creative with it! Food can still be tasty AND healthy for you if you find the right ingredients.
Look for some of these substitutions and more when you go to your shopping list!
