Cooking for a Crowd

Inviting over a group of guests always sounds like fun, but feeding a large group can send any cook into panic mode. We’re here to keep your stress levels low and ensure you have a great time with your guests.

Head Count - Determine What’s Enough
It can be difficult to know exactly how much food to make, but you want to make sure you have enough. To be safe, plan generously for each adult and a little less for each child. Be sure to account for extra guests as well. Many enjoy sending their guests home with leftovers as well, so if that’s your plan make enough for 30 people instead of 20.

Stick to What You Know
When hosting a large group of people, it’s not the best time to try out a new recipe. Cooking what you already know well lessens the chance of a mistake that could turn into a disaster. Many times, what you know includes favorites that your guests will love.

Prepare and Cook Ahead of Time
There are many steps a host can take to prepare days in advance. Try chopping vegetables and/or cooking and freezing main dishes ahead of time. When you save just a few dishes to prepare the day of, you have more time to spend with your guests. Choosing dishes you can make in big batches ahead of time is a lifesaver!

Space Out Oven Use
It’s easy to have multiple items waiting to be put in the oven. Many think it’s acceptable to average the cooking temperature of two items to save time, but that increases the risk of serving undercooked food. Instead, space out your cooking of sides and main dishes. Keep foods warm with hot plates or slow cookers.

Pre-Made Items
When hosting a large crowd, serving a premade appetizer or dessert saves a lot of time. Have a difficult time making pastries or need a quick dip to go with chips? Stop by Kuhn’s for our premade foods.
